This view of Cairo by the artist was based on sketches made on his journey through the Orient. It shows the palaces, mosques, and mausoleums of the Mamluk quarter Tabbana in the foreground. The city skyline is dominated by the minarets of the Emir Aqsunqur, which was built in 1347 and can be seen close to the Citadel. (via)
